Charleston County has partnered with SCDOT, City of North Charleston and City of Charleston to improve bike/pedestrian access to and from the Northbridge and across the Ashley River.

The County’s Public Works Department is managing this effort through the Better Northbridge Study.

On Tuesday, July 27, Charleston County Council approved funding for the study to move forward through conceptual design, public involvement and preparation of a federal grant application.

Azalea Drive was identified for a lane diet study with a focus on bike/pedestrian traffic to and from Northbridge. The traffic study has since been completed.

The study determined restriping Azalea Drive would benefit both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. This restriping will include two travel lanes, a center turn lane and a bike lane on either side of the road.

The SCDOT will therefore include the re-striping in an upcoming resurfacing project focused on Azalea Drive from the King Street Extension to Leeds Avenue in 2021-2022.
