The Study

In 2008, a feasibility study was conducted that indicated improvements necessary for the West Ashley side leading up to the bridge as well as a standalone pedestrian facility but did not include improvements on the North Charleston side of the bridge. Since the study, there have been improvements on the West Ashley side of the Northbridge to include a multi-use path on SC-7, the Old Towne District Improvement Project, the Sumar Street Site Redevelopment, and the construction of the Northbridge Park. Likewise, the County has funded the Azalea Drive Sidewalk Improvements on the North Charleston side of the structure.

The current Northbridge Bike/Pedestrian Study is a TST 2021 funded study focused on developing a plan for a safe and equitable crossing of the Ashley River and connecting the two communities. The study is considering options that connect to existing and proposed bike and pedestrian infrastructure on both sides of the river.

The county is also working on bike and pedestrian improvements to support and fill the gaps within the pedestrian network on both sides of the bridge in order to facilitate safer movement and connectivity of people traveling between the communities.

Charleston County has identified several complimentary projects on the north side of the bridge including the Azalea Drive Bike Lane Improvement.

The proposed Better Northbridge involves constructing a standalone bike and pedestrian connection alongside the bridge in order to address safety concerns highlighted by the recent pedestrian fatalities on or near the bridge.

Why a bike/pedestrian bridge?

Since 2015, there have been four cyclist fatalities on the Northbridge between Azalea Drive in North Charleston and Poston Road in West Ashley. Additionally, there have been six people seriously injured on bike or foot while crossing the bridge since 2013. The proposed Better Northbridge would mitigate future injury and death of those pedestrians and cyclists crossing the Ashley River.

The project team is continuing to explore funding opportunities. We have submitted RAISE grant applications in FY 2022, 2023, and 2024.
